Our heroine Caro is alone driving through a dark desolate road in Northampton towards the end of the war - 1944. She comes upon a lone figure in the mist and identifies him as a US GI soldier - a black GI - does she do the right thing and offer him a lift or let her inner fears ( prejudices ? ) rule. Initially she zooms on, but chastises herself and offers him a lift to his base... 2nd chapter was more identifiable than the first short chapter.
