In a world full of history told from the perspective of men, books that offer a story from a female viewpoint intrigue me greatly. I am a huge fan of books containing multiple narratives, so the three timelines seen in the First Look had me hooked. As well as the elegant writing style, the book seems well-researched, based on the snippets of cultural information to do with race relations and the expedition that we have seen in the first thirty pages. The characters of Caro and Charlotte are both quietly tenacious, and I am intrigued to see how their similarities develop as the book progresses. Both being from eras where women were not afforded the same rights we are today, I look forward to seeing these women carve their way in a world unfortunately not designed for them.

The cover image is beautiful, but the lone boat could suggest danger, perhaps a hint to the complexity of the tale unfolding before us.
