Elisabeth Gifford has a real talent for painting worlds with her words. In this book you are seamlessly drawn into Scotland and the Arctic as we explore a family's unexplained history.
Caro has recently married Alasdair and they go to live, with their baby, in a cottage on the family estate in Scotland. However a flash flood leaves the cottage uninhabitable but, more disturbingly, reveals a buried body in the garden.
There had always been a mystery about one of Alasdair's ancestors - who seemingly was wiped from the family tree - is the discovery of the body about to solve this puzzle?
As with previous books I've read from this author, she weaves an absorbing story around historical events. However it's not just about the past story as this book also examines the, sometimes, thorny issues of family relationships and the art of compromise.
A beautifully written tale of mystery, love and family.
