A slow page turner which is well worth sticking with. The story begins in the 1940s, we meet Caro and her new husband Alasdair travelling back to Scotland to his dilapidated family home. With their new baby and a new regime to fit into Caro feels like a fish out of water until she is given the task of sorting the family archive. This for me was the turning point of the book and where the story really started.
We then follow a mystery of Alasdair's forefather who set out to the Arctic by sea and of an Inuit and her baby. Who were they and what happened to them? There is also the mystery of the remains of a body found in the grounds of the Scottish house which takes the plot in a mysterious journey.

The book is set in the 1870s and 1944 and 1949 which gives depth to all of the characters we meet. The characters develop over time in the story and engages the reader.

The historical detail is fascinating and well researched.
