I have read some of this author's work before and was not disappointed and this book was no exception, I was soon pulled into the storyline and was finding it extremely well written with some interesting characters.
Set in dual timelines 1949 and 1874. In 1949 we meet Caro (Caroline) married with a nine month old daughter Felicity, she lives with her husband Alasdair in Fife Scotland. Alasdair is a lecturer at the nearby University and also his mother Martha lives nearby. When it is suggested that Caro does some work investigating a family project to find out who Alasdair's great-grandmother was, (all they know is that she was a Mrs Gillan), first she is a bit apprehensive, but soon she is going through family records surrounding Kelly Castle in 1874. Not everything goes to plan and although they find some old photos, they also find something more sinister in the garden after a flood! Full of atmospheric locations and many interesting characters this makes a very readable book, one that you will remember for a long time as you discover the lives and stories of a very different way of life, the lives of the Inuit people and a lost way of life from the people of the far Arctic.
