The author, Elisabeth Gifford, is a new discovery to me, but after reading this I will certainly look out for more books written by her! I got through this book really quickly, and really enjoyed how descriptive the writing was, Gifford has a real way with prose and I was totally immersed in the story. If you're looking for a book that has everything, this is it - it has history, romance, a mystery and even a body!

With her love of Scotland, Gifford immediately makes the reader feel equally at home there as in East Anglia, as the story follows two timelines. This is a beautifully rich story of family, class and betrayal, with the timelines detailing the difficulties of managing the relationship between wife and the in-laws, which we know some are more successful than others.

The second timeline follows Caro, trying to uncover the secret of her husband's mysteries ancestors, and the past is slowly revealed as you move through the book.
