I loved this book, it was engaging and engrossing from the start. The author balances understanding of human emotions and feelings, especially regarding family dynamics, with a well researched backdrop for the story to play out. It was like two books in one playing out across different time periods. It would be easy to have one very strong and one less so, but I felt both stories were enjoyable to read.
No matter which time period you were reading about, it was just as gripping amd read at a good pace.

The research that went into the book clearly shines through as the parts of the book set in the Arctic north with the Inuit people was written so vividly you could really see the setting in your mind's eye. The Dundee settings were just as vivid and the difference in times was painted very well in both stories.

The ending was bitter sweet and I felt very emotional afterwards but it was handled sensitively. Overall it's a fantastic read.
