This book was an interesting historical romance set in two periods, the 1800s and post war Scotland. Independent and educated Caro finds life as a new mother in quiet Scotland difficult to settle do as a demanding mother in law and flooded house add pressure to her situation. However, the opportunity to look into the family archives to try to solve an old mystery gives her a new lease of life. The story switches between the 1940s and the previous century, gradually revealing the truth about a doomed love story. The author writes in a clear way and builds interest quite effectively. The reader is drawn gently in to the story of both sets of characters who are likeable and believable. The main mystery in the plot is revealed at the end of the book and had actually kept me guessing most of the way through. I found this book to be an enjoyable and satisfying read and would recommend it to others.
