I always feel comforted when I begin to read a book that I can relate to.
I grew up in East Anglia so was intrigued to journey back to the 1940s in the first chapter and realised that a young lady with a car in those days must have come from a wealthy family.
Her early pregnancy changes her plans to lecture at Cambridge University and sends her off to a home dominated by her mother in law.
We are then transported in steps back through time to what promises to be a fascinating adventure unravelling the family history. How will the exploration of the far Arctic wastelands and the discovery of human remains tie in with the wool industry and the need for whale oil.
With her love of Scotland, Elisabeth can make the reader feel equally at home in a past time and a very different world to East Anglia so I’m looking forward to continuing the journey through her fantastic discriptive writing.
