Lots of timeline switching

There's quite a lot of timeline switching going on in the early chapters of A Woman Made of Snow - for example, from Fife 1949 to Northampton 1944, then forward again to Fife 1949 before going back to Kelly Castle 1874 - but the main narrative seems to follow Caroline who, after being sent off to a home dominated by her mother-in-law when early pregnancy forces a change of plan to lecture at Cambridge University, attempts to uncover the secrets of her husband Alasdair's mysterious ancestor.

There's some interesting literary devices at play here, such as the novel's opening chapter which is written entirely in italic font, while the promise of a body found in the grounds of the castle makes for an intriguing story as Caroline becomes obsessive about what happened all those years ago and the reader wonders if the body could be that of Alasdair's ancestor?
