The story of a family murder mystery at Kelly castle is interesting and the relationship between the different characters is well constructed. Set mainly in the 1940s and with diary extracts taking the reader back to the 1800s and containing a range of different characters without being confusing. The move between different time periods and the link between different relatives past and present is very interesting. However, I found some of the writing quite repetitive.

The constant emphasis on the bond between mother and child is often overegged and distracts from the more relevant story of adventure and mystery.

The story that is set in the 1800s about trips on the Narwhal and Arctic expeditions seems very well researched and is engaging. This part I found to be a real page-turner. It is a nice change to read a story set in the Arctic and the inclusion of the lives of Inuit communities to be very different and evocative. It is clear that the author has done some thorough research into the racist attitudes towards Inuit people.
