I have mixed feelings regarding this book.

Most of it is beautifully written with some vivid imagery and there is no doubt that the author is excellent at telling a story and drawing the reader into it. I did, however, feel slightly short changed at the end for some reason. It may be that the characters were a bit too twee for my personal taste and I felt much more could have been made of Caroline’s character, but perhaps that is an accurate reflection of the period in which part of the novel is set.

I admire the research that the author must have carried out and particularly enjoyed the chapters set on a whaling ship travelling across the arctic. It was a very interesting introduction to an area of history I had not read about before.
The mystery element of whose body was found added depth and further interest.

I didn’t enjoy it nearly as much as The Lost Lights of St Kilda and it only just scraped four stars from me, but I would still recommend.
