From the moment I picked up this book I was captivated by the characters, and the way the author brought them and their different scenes to life.

Caro moves to her husband's family castle with their young daughter, where her mother in law still lives. She is asked to write the family's history, and to try and discover who the missing bride is. While there a body is discovered in the grounds. The story switches between 1949 and the 1870's following Caro's investigation and her life in the castle.

Much of the story centres around the complex relationship and dynamics between the different women in the two time frames, it is very much a female orientated work showing their strengths and weaknesses.

I particularly enjoyed the experiences of Oliver and his adventures on the whaling ships and the authors insight into the Innuit way of life.

Definitely a book to set time aside for, and to curl up with.
