Firstly, I love Karin Slaughter's writing anyway but this starts like it just might be the best one yet.
It starts in the hospital emergency department where Sara Linton is overseeing a shift as a favour to a friend. A young woman is brought in suffering catastrophic injuries after a low speed accident which doesn't seem to be the cause of anything but some superficial injuries. The patient tries to tell Sara what happened and begs her for help but dies before she can give a detailed account of everything that has happened to her.
Three years later, the young woman's parents are in court for a civil case against the man they believe to be responsible and Sara is called to testify. Once she is finished, an encounter with the man's mother leads her to discover that an assault that she had suffered many years before could be connected to this case.......
