Karin Slaughter can always be relied on to give her readers a novel full of suspense and intrigue and After That Night definitely lives up to expectations. Dr Sara Linton is on duty in the emergency department of Grady Memorial Hospital when a young woman, Dani Cooper, who has been the victim of a brutal assault is admitted. Despite Sara's best efforts the young woman doesn't survive her ordeal. It is doubly traumatic for Sara as she was the victim of a sexual assault five years earlier. The parents of the dead girl bring a civil case against the person believed to be responsible for their daughter's assault and subsequent death and Sara is the main witness when the case is heard. Having tried for many years to keep her own experience quiet there are some similarities with the assault on Dani Cooper. Sara is in a relationship with Will Trent an agent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and she has become friendly with his partner, Faith Mitchell, and the three of them are determined to discover the truth. There are many twists and turns as the story unfolds that will keep readers gripped from the beginning to the very end.
