It is easy to see why Karin Slaughter has sold 40 million books world wide. This is the first of her books that I have read, and it was spellbinding. The plot covers three people trying, almost unofficially, to uncover a group of highly wealthy and successful medical men who have developed a "rape club". The details of the plot are not for the faint hearted. Rape is a despicable crime, that has a shockingly low level of ever being detected and the men responsible jailed. The book is set in the USA and reveals how the capitalist system there means that if you have enough money you really are above the law, and ruthless commercialism means that good health care is only available to the rich. The police forces are underpaid and overworked and suffering from stress. This situation is balanced by Will, Sara and Faith who work tirelessly to trap the villains, and succeed. The genius of Karin Slaughter is that the characters are all clear and credible, the plot rolls on at a great pace. Suddenly one of the heros will see how a noise, for example, is actually a key matter - and you remember that noise from chapters ago. So, a brilliant plot, a difficult subject cleverly handled, fast paced and riveting. There are only two down sides. Being written in American, sometimes you have to guess the meaning, and ignore the "gotten" and "color" etc. The other thing is that there are lots of initials of police departments, medical departments, and so on. It is difficult to keep track of to what they refer. These are minor points in an excellent read.
