After That Night is the first book I've read by Karin Slaughter, although I'm aware she has millions of fans. The book is the eleventh in the author's thriller series featuring GBI Special Agent Will Trent and Medical Examiner Dr Sara Linton. I did feel a little at a disadvantage not knowing about events in previous books, the characters' back stories and how the relationships between the main characters had developed. However, leaving that aside, if you just sit back and enjoy the ride you will be swept along by unfolding events. The book is incredibly fast-paced, a real rollercoaster of a read and the level of detail in some of the scenes is amazing, such as the opening scenes set in an Emergency Room. The author clearly leaves no stone unturned in her research. The plot has many twists and turns incorporating issues such as male privilege, sexual violence and the misuse of power. Be aware it takes the reader to some really dark places.
