Again Again is very different from most of the things I have read from E. Lockhart. A lot of us are used to seeing E. Lockhart write thrillers but this is similar to her past ‘chick-lit’ type novels which I loved, but with an added twist. It is a book about love and learning to love but don’t let that put you off because in my opinion this book isn’t a romance novel.
This is a complex story that is sure to make you think about the ‘what-ifs’ in your life. What happens if there are parallel universes or different versions of ourselves who act differently. How would things play out differently if this were the case? Could you have been happier, braver or more determined? Again Again definitely makes you think a lot about your life even after finishing it, but it is throughly enjoyable.
Again Again is extremely unique and thought-provoking. You have to give this book your full concentration as at points it can get quite confusing with all the alternative universe and the timelines of the same events. Don’t be afraid to turn back and re-read sections to make sure that you understand things correctly.
The main character Adelaide is heart-broken, sad and suffers from an egg yolk of misery (her own definition of depression). Adelaide tries to look happy, vivid and strong but she cannot act anymore. She missed her relationship with her brother who is an addict. She is scared that he is going to relapse again and wants to take care of him. But Adelaide also wants to be loved. Her boyfriend has just ended their 8 month relationship and she has just met Jack whilst dog-walking who she remembers from a party two years ago.
Overall, Again Again is a fascinating story all about siblings, addiction, family, love, loss, regrets and choices. It might seem like a sad, upsetting and mind-boggling story but when you have finished it, you realise that you have read something that is hopeful, promising and extremely refreshing. E. Lockhart has written yet another excellent book that I can highly recommend.
