Lenny and her friend go to a regular meal in a fish cafe. They hope for the survival of one lobster, Don Juan Crustaceo. The lobster's story is like Dad's in micro-cosom. Lenny's Dad has cancer. His cancer has advanced. Death hangs over his every waking moment. One day, his number will be up.
The lobster was a lovely touch. Where there is nothing light-hearted about Dad's situation, the novel finds other places to insert humour.
Lenny resents her mother's absence. When the responsibility of helping Dad with his medical routine becomes too much, she leaves an angry message for her mother. It seemed she was blaming Mum, where there was nobody else to blame. I would be interested to see how their relationship changes across the story. Does Mum spend more time at home? Does Lenny realise Mum is trying to solve things by clutching at straws?
The heart on the cover looks as if it is exploding. I think this is hugely appropriate. Lenny feel as if she is waiting for her world to be blown apart.
