I had very high expectations when I began reading this novel as I absolutely adored Tall Oaks, Chris Whitaker’s previous novel. It had all the ingredients of an unforgettable read, and this does too. Chris Whitaker creates characters as real as your very own friends, places as real are the town you live in and plots that make you marvel at the sheer genius of the mind behind it all.

.

As a storm cloud settles over the town of Grace, a Bible-belt town in Alabama, and its
people search high and low for missing girl Summer Ryan, three friends commence their own hunt for her, one being her sister, Raine, a feisty, strong individual and two childhood buddies Noah and Purv. But on their hunt for Summer, danger lurks at every corner, and soon they come to realise that there is more to her disappearance than they originally thought.

Chris Whitaker’s inimitable skill at building suspense and developing tenderness and kindness to rival the dark elements is one that leaves me wanting more every time. Even just a few words – in this case ‘Brave and Fierce – are imbued with so much emotion, it really is profoundly touching. The bond between Noah and Purv is I think one of the aspects that stood out for me. Although there are some very, very dark themes to this novel, I’d say that at the heart of it, it is a story of love and friendship and sisterhood.

Chris Whitaker could write just about anything and I’d want to read it. Intricately plotted and beautifully written, All the Wicked Girls is spectacular. I can’t recommend it highly enough. A wonderfully dark, gripping, nuanced novel. I loved it!
