If you're looking for an entertaining mystery read then Amnesia ticks all the boxes. This is a novel within a novel, and I enjoyed reading both the present day (well, 1999) story alongside 'Death at Wyvis', the novel (or is it?) written by character Alastair.

Alastair is suffering from amnesia after a fall at home. In his eighties, and lacking next of kin, his friend Madeleine ropes in her great-niece, Clemence, to look after him until she can travel to Scotland. Clemence and Alastair discover the out of print novel and realise quickly that it reads as a confession - ending in the death of Clemence's grandmother at Alastair's hand.

There are a lot of coincidences in this novel, and I did guess the ending ahead of time, which is why I'm going for 3 stars. I enjoyed reading, and read it quickly, but it wasn't quite crafty enough for me to rate it higher.
