Michael Ridpath's new books always go to the top of my 'waiting to be read' pile.
Amnesia did not disappoint. Clemence a 20 year old student at St Andrews is asked to help Alastair, on old family friend of her great aunt who has fallen down stairs at his remote cottage and lost his memory. Together they read a 'novel' which appears to be about Alastair's earlier life but it is unclear how much is fact and how much is fiction. With Clemence's help, Alastair's memories start to return. These reveal a love affair, murder and a miscarriage of justice in the past and cause trouble for Clemence and Alastair in the present. A cleverly crafted plot that kept me guessing right to the end.
My only criticism is the number of characters (9)introduced in one short section set in France was confusing and distracted me from the story for quite a while until I had managed to work out their relationship to each other and to the present day Alastair and Clemence. Indeed the author himself seems to have got confused with names of his characters on at least 2 occasions.
