This book has all the ingredients for a story that will appeal to everyone. A wealthy family that is ruined when the father loses his job and house: friction between an overly protective recently widowed mother and her daughter in law: cruelty and bullying by teenage boys at a boarding school: friendships destroyed by untold secrets: illicit sex and adultery.
Despite the promise, the book didn't quite live up to my expectations and I found it relentlessly depressing with no silver linings or happy ending.
I can't help wondering what the future would hold for Olivia and her son, Edward, who are the only characters in the book who deserve any sympathy.
Well written though - I will try Colette Dartford's debut novel Learning to Speak American to see whether that is a bit more uplifting.
