When I first read the excerpt of Anna K I was instantly captivated. The characters seemed to already have so much depth and I sensed a hint of mystery behind their masks. As soon as I got my physical copy from Readersfirst, I dove right in. We meet a bright brunch of characters, all who have their own storylines that you follow throughout. The way the author changed from each perspective was rather intriguing and I found it very hard to put this book down! Towards the end of the novel I was very much in love with the characters and felt every part of their happiness and heartbreaks. The ending effected me so much that I had to take a day or two off to recover from such a wonderful book!! It took great strength not to just dive back in again!
The overall ending was a shock to me, I really wasn’t expecting it to go like that! I’ll admit, I cried and also was a little frustrated until I remembered the authors explanation of how she came about the tale of Anna K and how it is set on the original tale Anna Karenina. So I researched that novel and found that Anna K is a more modern and beautiful retelling with a somewhat more feminist approach to the original storyline.
Knowing the merging of classic work with modern day really pushed my overall review to 5-stars.
If you can get your hands on this book I highly recommend it! You will not regret meeting this bright and dramatic bunch!
