This book talks about those with mental health issues. Many books shy away from this topic, as it is sensitive and personal. Arctic Zoo talks about these issues tastefully, and portrays the issues in a way the reader can understand and sympathise with. The fact the characters are so young and all from different backgrounds emphasises the point that mental illness can affect anyone.
I am really intrigued to look more into the characters background and see what events occurred which caused them to all be placed in a mental health unit.
The book also covers issues which need to be changed, such as the issue of patients being released when their insurance runs out, rather than when they are actually well enough to be released back into society.
