An easy reading mental patient teen drama. The writing is good, the pace is quite quick, but sometimes overdoes the descriptive text. But overall, worth a read.

The setting of the mental hospital was good, the use of psychotherapist language, angry teens back biting, placing the reader within the turquoise walled prison. I would have preferred that the walls were asylum green though. You have this boy and girl meet, so theres a baseline hook of romance for you. The girl meets the boy when he rages in to the psych ward and gets injective by double sedatives, typical boy.

The author sometimes writes a little awkwardly, “begged one of the paramedics in cockney” could have been simplified to “begged the cockney paramedic”. McCoys crinkle cut crisps was another that urked me, being over descriptive for a popular crisp in the UK, also the use of soccer rather than football. I would also prefer that the writing would keep to American or UK terminology, rather than flipping between the two, but I suppose it is cross cultural and is for a teen audience on either side of the Atlantic.

This extract ends with the girl Georgia, who gets verbally abused by a grey haired perverted drone pilot before a drone race. The author ended the chapter on the race about to begin, placing the reader firmly on the side of Georgia, for victory over the old lech. We got short changed on the 23 rather than 30 pages, but it ended at a point where the book wills you to read more. I wonder if she loses and stabs him in the scrotum.

I would read it, but it’s aimed at teens, who would get more from it.
