Important themes but the writing style didn't engage my interest.

Although I often enjoy books which are aimed at the YA market, my first impression was that I didn't feel sufficiently engaged with the author's writing style, which seemed to be on teh rather simplistic side, targeted at the younger end of the age range. That feels a shame because the main themes are ones which would otherwise immediately attract my interest.
