An intelligent rom-com with properly dimensioned characters is always a treat to read.

I like to read historical fiction and science fiction because I enjoy the experience of stepping into another world. This story is set in the twenty first century but in a country I've never visited and a culture I am not part of. I feel I now know so much more about Indian Muslim families and daily life together with some impressions of Toronto and even a few Urdu and Arabic words. And, of course, the expectations and constraints of young Muslims active in their community.

There is a strong focus on marriage and freedom, wealth and ambition, happiness and friendship, family and loyalty. There's a lot crammed into this novel with never a dull moment. There are some truly comedic moments; also many insights to mull over and perhaps cause you to reflect on the shape and aim of your own life.
