From the very first line this novel reels you in and leaves you longing to know more. Why is Parris the place where girls seemingly go to die? Why are there so many terrible tales of girls meeting untimely ends on this island? Conjure up the promises of a rather luxurious island with a sinister mystery and mentions of a curse and I’m sold. This novel manages to paint that scene and leave readers longing to learn more. I also find it interesting that the central character struggles with intrusive thoughts – a topic of mental health that doesn’t tend to pop up too often in YA fiction. From the opening I also imagine that this book will do the emotional side of the mystery justice too. Truthfully the one thing I’m slightly wary of at present is a few of the conversations and whether I find little snippets of them believable or not. It’s hard to say for certain until given the chance to know the characters better though. And regardless of this caution I’m still very much intrigued by the mystery that’s promised within these pages. Cover wise I love the colour scheme although the overall style isn't my favourite.
