Oh how I love a good YA murder mystery - it’s like you take all of the drama and excitement of a normal thriller then throw in a bucketload of teenage angst and just watch it explode 🤣 This one is definitely no exception!
Luca is still reeling from the death of her best friend, who she believes died because of the curse running through the island of Parris - why else would so many young girls be dying all the time in mysterious circumstances? But then one day she comes home and finds out that her older sister Whitney is the latest victim, and decides to take things into her own hands. With the help of her new neighbour, and love interest, Naomi, Luca is determined to find out what happened to her sister and finally put the curse to rest…
First of all, the location is a massive ✅ Hot sunny island full of mostly mega-rich families in their fancy beachfront mansions? Yes please. I do love a book where I can see how the other half live!
I loved Luca too - so nice to finally see a fellow bitch as the main character 🤣 But whilst she’s fierce and mouthy, she’s also a total badass who’ll do anything to protect the people she loves, and whilst she might not always be likeable she’s easy to respect. And huge bonus points to the author for having a fat black girl (Luca’s words, not mine!) who also likes girls as the lead to our story - we love to see it 🙌
The mystery itself was also great and I had no idea which way it was going - would there be some otherworldly element with all this talk of curses, or is there a serial killer on the loose?! Or just some bad luck for one little island. I didn’t guess the reveal which is always a good sign!
I have to admit I did find the very end a bit of a disappointment as it’s not the way I would’ve wanted to wrap things up, but I don’t want to give anything away and it didn’t ruin my enjoyment of the rest of the book! A fun read!
