This was an unusual YA thriller located on an island where everyone seems to know each other and it’s rare to get newcomers yet there have been a number of suspicious deaths over the years including that of teenager Luca’s best friend three years ago. Luca is still struggling with her grief and is convinced there is a curse on the island, a feeling only strengthened when her sister Whitney is found dead.
This was a story on two levels, firstly about Luca’s desperation to discover the truth about Whitney’s death but also about her exploring her own attraction to her new neighbour Naomi. There were some great twists and turns in this and an awful lot of hidden truths, this truly does turn into Luca being able to trust no one. The island itself is very privileged overall and it’s easy to see the issues that being different to the rich white residents causes. The development of her relationship with Naomi is well written and I like Luca’s very clear morals.
