Although this is in many ways your run of the mill teen detective mystery story, it is very gripping - I couldn't put it down! Lucy is a teen who, despite her life of relative luxury, has certainly been unlucky when it comes to unfortunate events. The main driving force through the story is the so-called 'curse' which has been taking the lives of girls across the island for as long as anyone can remember. Although this doesn't get resolved as such, it certainly left me wondering if the curse wasn't just downright misogyny and violence against women so pervasive in this overly privileged island community. It's definitely thought-provoking!
The mystery of Lucy's sister's death is well played out, it keeps you guessing and it really feels like you're going on that journey of discovery with Lucy. It also made me very suspicious of all the characters, although not the ones who were actually guilty!
Overall, I think this is a gripping read perfect for the poolside and I would definitely recommend it.
