I always find it difficult to review books that were just okay. I enjoyed reading the book and thought that the writing style was good. However, it wasn't anything super special. Would I read it again, or treasure it forever? No. Am I glad I read it? Yes.
The storyline, told from Luca's perspective (a teenager who is convinced the island she lives on is cursed as young girls keep dying), was enough to keep me interested, but I wasn't gripping the edge of my seat with anticipation.
For me, the setting was the best part of the novel. The island of Parris was almost as much a character in the story as anybody else. It came to life and you ended up blaming it for the deaths.
The ending left a little to be desired. I didn't feel like the story came to a proper conclusion. Was the island at fault? Is the curse real? It didn't tie together nicely, unfortunately.
I would definitely give other books by this author a try. It was perfectly fine. :)
