I have just finished the YA book Bad Things Happen Here by Rebecca Barrow. Set on the fictional island of Parris, this seemingly perfect paradise has a hidden darkness, the deaths of several young women. The main character, Luca, has lost her best friend Polly and then her sister Whitney which prompts her to investigate what is happening to try to prevent any further deaths.

This coming of age book, in a relatively short number of pages, tackles themes of young love, friendship, sexuality, mental health, drug use, grief and loss. I liked the short, sharp chapters which compelled me to read just one more and the twists and turns of the plot.

Overall I enjoyed the book. It held my interest throughout and I found the colours of the cover attractive. Young Adult books and their 21st century themes have certainly come along way since my late 20th century youth!
