On the island of Ramoa lie three grand cities. They are separated by the dangerous expanse known as the Beastlands, a wild territory inhabited by fearsome and lethal creatures.
Kayla lives in Sophiatown. She is training to become a skyrider, alongside her pangron companion, Faro. Their duty is to safeguard the city from any threats such as the Scourge, a deadly illness. However, when the pangron is abducted, Kayla ventures on a rescue mission having to venture into the dangerous Beastlands.
On her journey, Kayla meets Alethia, a healer from Ataria. Her goal is to keep her ailing grandmother from the clutches of the Scourge, as she searches for a cure. She also meets Rustus, who is an exile from Ataria. He is keen to become a warrior. Each of the three characters has their very different personalities and own skill set but they learn that together they can help each other and friendships develop.
All three characters are interesting because of their individual stories about how they come to meet. The description of the settings and the strange creatures are clear and vivid. The story is easy to follow and the chapters ending with cliff-hangers just keeps you reading on!
I would recommend this book for older KS2 children who like fantasy adventures.
