Beastlands - Race to Frostfall Mountain by Jess French is a fast paced adventure book set on the magical and mystical island of Ramoa. There are three main characters Kayla Karakka, Alethea Bashoa and Rustus Furi. Kayla is a cadet at the Sky Academy whose best friend is a winged pangron called Faro who is attacked and stolen. Alethea, recently bereaved of her father, is a healer experimenting with poultices, salves, tinctures and balms of rare plants to try and find a cure for the Scourge - a deadly disease which had been plaguing the people of Ataria. Finally, Rustus, trying to graduate from being an Unscorched to being Scorched, once, twice or multiple times like his brothers.
The setting of the book has jungle, a volcano, fjords, vivid colours, wild and mysterious creatures and demonstrates the team work required as the trio of characters work together to succeed in their quests, delving deep through The Beastlands.
I found the imagination of the author to compile this book very impressive. I also admire the capacity of young readers minds to follow all of these characters and creatures! A great shared read aloud book for younger readers or independent reading for older readers. The cover is very eye catching and will stand shimmering and inviting, ready to be picked off the bookshelf for the adventures to begin.
