Among the plethora of fantasy adventure books available for young people at present, this one stands up well in its story line, characterization, and atmospheric description.

Jess French has created an imaginative fantasy adventure in Beastlands
- Race to Frostfall Mountain.

The fictional Island of Ramoa, on which the story is set, is vividly described, thus making it easy for the reader to picture; the background story is very clear.

Fascinating encounters with some of Ramoa's deadliest creatures, and insights into its both healing and dangerous plants, all add to the excitement and anticipation as to what the three adventurers are about to encounter.

Sky Cadet Kayla is lost in the wild Beastlands of the island when her beloved winged Pangron is stolen.
Alethea, has continued her father's career and skills as a healer and botanist, and hopes and to find a cure for a mystery disease that is sweeping parts of the island .
Rustus [kind and loyal], attempts to follow in the family's footsteps to and become an Atari warrior. He has been cast out into the dangerous Beastlands through no fault of his own.

They become a skillful and unstoppable team, not only able to help each other, but also to solve the island's mysteries.

The outstanding character for me was Marquis Macdonald, an eccentric personality who reminded me of some of J K Rowling's more quirky creations.

Covid has inevitably influenced the writing of fiction for young people, as it influenced their lives for a while in their formative years.
It is to be hoped that they will recognize the allegorical nature of the story, and be encouraged to read "the Classics" of this genre.

Nonetheless they will hopefully enjoy a well written and exciting story for the pleasure of reading.

I have rated this book 3 stars. If it had been the first of its kind I had read, it may have been higher, but I have read a lot of young adult fantasy fiction recently, and comparison is inevitable.
