Well despite the cover being nothing special in my opinion the first 5 pages of this first impression almost did the whole job of making me very curious about this book.

A sample of a myth about monsters burying people alive, and a mysterious delta you can't remember passing through when you come out the other side, what's not to like about an opener like that!

The description given of this mysterious Delta and the land of Submundo beyond it is wonderfully described in these opening pages, with enough odd details to enable the reader to get a sense of what the author was thinking whilst letting our imaginations do most of the work.

Then we find out Ben, the main character, is a policeman, sent to investigate the deaths of the native inhabitants this has really gotten my hopes up for some kind of monster/mythical crime story, but whatever direction this is heading this impression is intriguing.

It could have ended on page 5 or 23,rather than 37, really I didn't need anything else to be interested,if slightly mystified, and hoping the tone/direction the full novel will be headed in keeps this level of engagement
