I wasn't really sure what to expect going into this book. I have read another book by Chris Beckett which I enjoyed but didn't love. This, whilst still sci-fi, was strides ahead in terms of quality, originality and interest. I've read books set in the mysterious realms of South America before but this was original in its feel. It dealt with some big issues in terms of culture, development and advancement and I honestly found it not only fascinating but very enjoyable. The narrative was gripping and very true to life. Beckett observed little social cues which made the writing really zing. What I found particularly clever, was the change in writing which reflected the change in the story. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to everyone.
