It has taken me several weeks after receiving this book to actually get around to reading it. The reason is that I don't like adult fantasy - I haven't even read The Lord of the Rings! However, having started it, I then read it in one go as I thought if I put it down, I might never pick it up again.
What a strange book.
The story appears to be about a somewhat inhibited policeman who is sent to a distant (imaginary) land to deter the locals from killing the duendes, who are harmless, passive indigenous creatures. Duende is apparently either a frenzied state or the Mexican version of a goblin or gnome. To get to this land you need to pass through Nus, where anything that happens is forgotten.
However, the story is also about temptation, guilt, loss of inhibitions, addiction, scientific progress, relationships, religion and the purpose of life.
I kept expecting to find the whole story was a dream, or nightmare.
Interesting ending with lots of possibility.
