Ben Ronson is a policeman. He travels to the Submundo Delta (a fictional area in South America) to investigate the killings of a species that live there, the duendes. These are strange creatures that have a weird effect on humans, bringing forth their deepest fears and desires whenever they are near. Ben's job is to stop the locals killing the duendes as they have now been classified as humanoids.

The Delta itself is very well described, a completely different world to our own. To get there the visitors have to travel by boat through the Zona, an area that once you have travelled through your memory of that piece of the voyage is wiped clean. At the heart of the Zona is a town called Nus, because of the fact that you will never remember what happened during your time there this has become a lawless place where innermost desires can be entertained.

The descriptions of the different areas of the Delta were fascinating. I liked how the characters were fleshed out, from the outsiders that have lived there for too many years to ever go back to a normal life to the visitors such as Ben who becomes highly affected by the area and what he may or may not have done in Nus.

Sci Fi is not a genre I would normally pick up, so I was grateful to Readers First for sending me a copy of this book. I did enjoy this novel, although the story was rather strange in places and the ending felt a little incomplete for me.
