From the author of the brilliant Home Fire comes the new novel, Best of Friends.
In late 80s Karachi, teenagers Zahra and Maryam are growing up in a changing world. The references drew me in, as a nineties kid myself, there is a certain nostalgia to the beginning of the novel, with the films they watch and the music they mention.
I know that the novel goes on to meet the girls again when they're all grown up, and I'm really interested to find out how their friendship evolves, and what they are doing 30 years later.
The simple cover design evokes curiosity and brings to mind a timelessness that suits the two time periods of the novel. I'm keen to learn more about life in Karachi, especially what it was like for young women, so this novel has me very intrigued.
