Dealing with difficult issues like gender and race, the story explores how friendship can survive when similar children grow to become very different adults.

The story begins in Karachi, Pakistan in the late 1980s, the time of the Black Friday Hyderabad Sindh massacre. A time of fear and persecution, so this immediately puts the lead characters in a difficult time, any friendship forged with tragic background circumstances is blind to be emotional and difficult.

30 year alter these teenage girls are now adults and their lives have become very different, with echoes of other strong, female friendship novels like Beaches.
Works view, politic, religion and gender roles all structure the development of the women and their friendship as they struggle to maintain the innocent relationship of their youth.
