I was very much looking forward to reading this book, I find it fascinating reading about different cultures and really getting sucked into the stories of the characters. This story focuses on two best friends, Zahra and Maryam. Although completely different, these two teenagers become best friends and you go on a journey with them, living in Karachi, laughing and joking until something happens that changes their lives forever.
The story then jumps forward to the two girls as adults living in London, carving out a different life for themselves. They still have a strong friendship despite profound differences in opinion, one a tech investor, one an civil rights activist but both women are appalled by the UK government.
Both Zahra and Maryam are unique women and I think this book is beautifully written. I haven’t read any of Shamsie’s other books, but I will definitely be picking them up now.
