Best of friends is a complex book that spans from Pakistan to England. It follows the lives of two girls who grew up best of friends in Pakistan before both coming to live in the UK.

The girls, Zarha and Maryam, come from different positions in life but tell each other everything.

When in London, as adults, the women have very different jobs which often brings them into conflict over their personal values and beliefs. Throughout the book their friendship is tested and their views on past events are challenged.

I really enjoyed learning about life in Karachi in the first part of the book. The second part was more relatable for me when they came to England, but I love to learn about other cultures. You got a real sense of each woman’s character and it was really interesting to see how their different perspectives and family values influenced how both of them grew up and how they approach life. It shows that even though these girls grew up so closely and shared some traumatic experiences their outlooks could not be more different, and yet somehow they hold onto their friendship!
