Best of Friends by Kamila Shamsie is about the friendship of 2 girls, Zahra and Maryam in 1988 Karachi then 30 years later in London.
In 1988 the girls are 14 years old and would appear to be opposites to each other. Zahra is studious and quiet, determined to get a scholarship to go to University in London and become a lawyer. Maryam is destined to take over the family business and continue making her family money.
However one event at a party changes the course of Maryam's life with her family selling the business and sending her to boarding school.
30 years later Zahra is divorced and head of the Centre for Civil Liberties based in London. Fighting for freedom I the UK with famous friends.
Maryam is a top venture capitalist also living in London married to a female with a small daughter.
However their friendship has endured and they meet every Sunday until a few events occur and may change their opinion of each other and bring the past into their future.
I really enjoyed this novel all about lasting female friendship set against a background of a changing world.
