This is not the sort of book that I would usually read, but I was drawn to it after reading the first impression, as it seemed like a very interesting way of looking back into a political history through the eyes of two teenagers in Karachi.
I found it to be brilliantly written and both moving and thought provoking. There were useful snippets of culture and news stories throughout that maintained the sense of time and place and really brought the story to life for me.
I was so engrossed in the lives of Maryam and Zahra that I would have liked a continuation of the narrative covering their later years in education but it jumped forward significantly in time to when they both had very successful careers.
I thought the ending was cleverly done by drawing a close to a defining part of their lives and Zahra paying the price that she always felt she would one day need to do for Maryam.
