The story beginning has the feeling of a classic coming of age/friendship story. It is set around two girls - Zahra and Maryam from the age of fourteen and encapsulates their respective families and their own personalities. This draws the reader on to find out about the women they will become later. The story does then move into them as women with independent lives and careers of their own. I did like how the book unfolded the strong connection between Zahra and Maryam and I liked how the influences of actions of their youth and family expectations affected the people they became.
This is an enjoyable read if you like stories about the close friendships of 2 people and there is a lot to keep you interested in the individual characters and how they are together, but for me however I found that the plot wasn’t that strong to carry my full interest.
