For me, as with many other people I suspect, the first novel by Kamila Shamsie that I read was the hugely successful Home Fire which was nominated for award after award a few years ago. Best of Friends is a slightly less incendiary book but still provocative in its own way. It is the story of two friends growing up in Pakistan and follows them to their middle aged lives, thousands of miles away in London. I enjoyed the early story more as the two are more connected and the setting of historical Pakistan is captivating. The strains on their friendship as they grow up and their lives change and the world changes is an interesting theme and is a great backdrop to the story but for a book that isn't particularly long there are sections that seem to drag a little and things meander a bit but overall I enjoyed the journey. Recommended although I would like to have stayed in Pakistan a little longer.
