It was a bit 'meh'

I wanted to enjoy this book, and whilst I finished it, I can't say I liked it or hated it. It was just a bit meh.

It is the story of Zahra and Maryam who grew up in Karachi, and remained friends for 40 years although I can't actually see why. As they grew older their opinions and values were at completely opposite ends of the spectrum and yet they still remained friends - more for longevity's sake than actually liking the other person.

The book is also centred around an event when they were 14 and they got into a schoolfriend's car and were made to feel uncomfortable by the driver. I appreciate in Karachi girls driving with unrelated boys is an issue but this just seemed like a non-event. Which they carried with them for 30 years - even when during that time they grew up and were educated in the UK.

They each blamed different people for the consequences, but not the oppressive regime they had lived in.

I just found it all very underwhelming.
